How to Set Up and Use Higgsfield API (and Save Money)
After my GPT-6 Astra + Higgsfield MCP video, the comments all said the same thing: great quality, but not $200-a-month great. Higgsfield’s new API fixes that. Instead of a monthly plan, you pay per generation and get Seedance, Kling, Veo, Nano Banana and more from one API.
API vs subscription
They’re completely separate:
- Subscription credits don’t transfer to the API.
- You don’t need a subscription to use the API. It works on its own.
- The API works like a wallet: add funds, generate, and each generation’s cost is deducted.
At the time of recording, signing up with a business email gave $15 in API credit (a payment method is required to activate it). There was also a limited-time discount on selected models, and Seedance 2.5 is a good one to pick if it’s on the list.
Is it actually cheaper?
If you generate a lot, a subscription (up to about $169/month) can make sense. If you create videos here and there, you often end the month with unused credits. With the API that problem disappears.
Compared with other providers like Fal, nearly every model came out cheaper on Higgsfield. For example, Seedance 2.0 was 9¢/second vs 14¢/second. A premium model like Seedance 2.5 runs roughly 14¢ per second depending on settings.
Setup with Claude Code or Codex
- In the API dashboard, create an API key. Keep it private.
- Your agent needs to know how each model works (overview, parameters, schema). You could paste docs every time, but I built a Higgsfield API skill, basically a mini-MCP for this workflow (linked in the video’s pinned comment).
- Copy the repository link, open Claude Code, Codex or your AI coding agent, paste it and say “clone and run this repo.” The agent does the setup.
Now you just say “use the Higgsfield API to generate this video” and the agent reads the docs, picks the right settings and runs it. You can even ask which model fits a project best, or set a maximum budget.
Real test: 30 seconds with Seedance 2.5
Prompt to Codex: a 30-second video about the 1952 London Smog, in a desaturated grey-and-white 3D mannequin style, using Seedance 2.5 through the Higgsfield API. I didn’t open Seedance, copy docs or configure anything.
- Estimated cost before discounts: $13
- Final cost after the discount: $9, roughly 30% off
And that’s one of the more expensive models on purpose. For cheaper runs, just tell the agent to use another model.
