Titles & thumbnails playbook
The title formulas and thumbnail triggers behind the viral faceless channels I've broken down, and how I test a thumbnail against competitors before publishing.
Your thumbnail and title do more work than the video. The best animation in the world gets no views if nobody stops scrolling. Here’s every formula I’ve pointed out in my breakdowns.

The title formulas
1. Mystery
“No one can explain this painting.” The art channel that made $75K in 90 days never names the painting in the title. It sells the emotion.
2. Shock
“This painting is actually terrifying.” Same channel, same idea: a strong reaction word, no details.
3. Myth vs reality
“7 mythical creatures that really existed.” The title makes a promise (there’s a real, scientific explanation), and the thumbnail shows myth next to reality. It’s a curiosity gap the viewer has to close.
4. Company + how + dramatic outcome + dollar amount
“Cava: How $18 bowls bankrupted a $10 billion dream.” Brand recognition, curiosity and credibility in one line. This is the formula behind the company downfall channel in my “5 boring niches” video.
5. “Why it sucks to be…”
“Why it sucks to be a Halo Spartan” (3.7M views). Take a huge existing fan base and flip the angle to how miserable, dangerous or absurd that life would be.
6. The true story that sounds too insane to be real
“How Vietnamese tunnels outsmarted the US military” (2M views in 30 days). Underdog + powerful opponent + “how”.
7. The everyday question
“How did ancient humans deal with pain?”, “Why can’t you remember being a baby?”, “Why do you forget everything when you walk into a room?” Simple questions everyone has wondered about. This is what the stick-figure channels run on.
8. “How they did X without Y”
“How they built skyscrapers without cranes in the 1910s” (400K+ views on a channel under 4K subscribers).
9. The secret history of an everyday thing
“The history of paper, the invention China kept secret for 700 years.” A normal object + a hidden twist.
10. “Why does…” explainers
“Why cities stay warmer at night.” Something everyone has felt without knowing why. That gap between noticing and understanding is exactly what makes people watch.
Picking the winner
- Generate 10 ideas, then pick the one you’d click if it showed up in your feed. Not the coolest-sounding one.
- Read the titles out loud.
- One clear promise per title. If you can’t explain the video in one sentence, the title won’t either.
Thumbnail triggers that work
- Short, curiosity-driven text. Three words or fewer. Stick-figure channels all do this.
- Yellow text. It stands out on almost any background. Use a bold, playful font (Comic Sans works for stickman content) and an effect so it pops.
- Myth vs reality side by side (mythical creatures).
- Scale. People struggling to hold fruit 10× its normal size (desert farming).
- Dramatic text over black-and-white archive photos. “One mistake to death” (historical construction).
- Items framed in circles. It stands out more and feels more clickable (“every X explained”).
- The same character every time. Upload your channel character as a reference so the thumbnail stays on-brand.
How I make them (free)
- Paste a thumbnail prompt into Claude or ChatGPT together with your whole script. It writes a custom image prompt plus short text options. (My ultimate thumbnail generator prompt is free in the Vault.)
- Generate the image in any free tool, like Gemini or Pippit. Make 3–5 variations.
- In Canva: Create → YouTube thumbnail, set the image as background, remove any watermark with Magic eraser, add your text.
Test it against competitors before you publish
This is the step most people skip. Install the free vidIQ Chrome extension. On the YouTube upload page, after adding your title and thumbnail:
- Click Preview thumbnail to see it the way viewers will on the homepage.
- Go to Competition → Competitors and add the channel you’re up against.
Now your thumbnail sits side by side with theirs. You see instantly whether it stands out, and you can swap titles to compare. Happy? Save and publish.
